From one-room schools and kacha roads to India's busiest skies — three decades of building the helicopters, heliports and connectivity that brought aviation to places the runway never reached.
"No runway? No problem." It was never just a book title — it was a way of working.
Prof. Dr. Sanjay Kumar h.c. has spent 36+ years at the leading edge of Indian mobility — first in the automobile industry, then across nearly three decades in civil aviation at Pawan Hans Ltd., where he rose to Executive Director and Officiating Chairman & Managing Director under the Ministry of Civil Aviation.
He pioneered India's first integrated heliport at Rohini, launched the country's first seaplane services in the Andaman & Nicobar Islands, and built helicopter pilgrimage connectivity to Kedarnath, Vaishno Devi and Amarnath Ji — carrying lakhs of devotees to shrines the road could never reach.
Today, in his academic "second innings," he serves as Professor & Chair Head of Aviation Management at Graphic Era Deemed to be University, Dehradun — mentoring the next generation while authoring research on Advanced Air Mobility and the digital future of flight. He is also Co-Founder & CEO of AviatelQ Tech LLP, an aviation-technology startup.
A journey that climbed steadily across four decades — automobiles, aviation, leadership, and now academia.
Eight formative years in India's automobile sector (1988–1996) — learning operations, manufacturing discipline and the engineering rigour that would later define an aviation career.
Joined India's premier helicopter services company, beginning a near three-decade ascent through operations, commercial strategy and executive leadership.
Delivered India's first integrated heliport at Rohini, the nation's first seaplane services in Andaman & Nicobar, and helicopter pilgrimage connectivity to Kedarnath, Vaishno Devi and Amarnath Ji. Rolled out UDAN helicopter connectivity across multiple states.
Rose to the apex of the organisation — and served as MoCA-appointed Nodal Person for launching the B.Sc. Aeronautical Engineering programme at RGNAU. Co-founded AviatelQ Tech LLP as an MSME aviation-tech startup.
Professor & Chair Head of Aviation Management — teaching, researching Advanced Air Mobility and aviation digital twins, and authoring the leadership memoir "No Runway? No Problem."
Beyond titles — the connectivity, the institutions and the communities built along the way.
Helicopter links to Kedarnath, Vaishno Devi and Amarnath Ji — carrying lakhs of devotees safely to the Himalayan shrines each season.
Launched the country's first seaplane services in the Andaman & Nicobar Islands, opening island connectivity that didn't exist before.
Pioneered India's first integrated heliport in Delhi — a template for urban vertical mobility infrastructure.
Implemented UDAN helicopter connectivity across multiple states under the regional connectivity scheme — aviation for the underserved.
MoCA-appointed Nodal Person for the B.Sc. Aeronautical Engineering programme at RGNAU — and now Chair Head shaping aviation curricula.
Led women's empowerment, cancer-patient outreach and Swachh Bharat initiatives — proving an aviation PSU can lift communities, not just aircraft.
Honoured with the Star Speaker Award at WoW Talks, New Delhi — recognised for thought leadership and inspiring keynotes on aviation and leadership.
